WHAT IS AN OPTIMISTIC ATTITUDE?

Optimistic people view the world differently. They may have a life experience that is almost identical to someone else, yet have an end result as a positive experience rather than negative. They tend to focus on the positive, seek it, attract it and live in it.

BENEFITS OF BEING OPTIMISTIC

Increases Immunity

A research study was performed where saliva samples were taken. These samples were measured for the substances that protect us from colds and infections. On days where people “felt” more positive; their immunity level was markedly higher than on the days when they “felt” down.

Helps Fight Cancer

A group of cancer patients were taught positive thinking skills and by practice they became habits. They were also taught relaxation techniques. These patients showed much higher levels in their cells’ natural ability to fight the cancer than did the patients that only received medical treatment but no special positive thinking counseling.

Increases Lifespan

Numerous studies have proven that people that make choices and feel in control of their lives tend to live longer. One study was done with nursing home residents. They were given a choice of what to have for their meal or what kind of nightly entertainment they would participate in. At the end of 18 months, their mortality rate was half of those who were not offered as much control.

Promotes Wellness

Many companies have learned the optimistic way to prevent their employees from getting ill. They have chosen to give “wellness” days and do away with “sick” days. These companies have decreased the days employees call in sick as well as create a more positive work environment.

Helps Recovery

Optimistic patients that had undergone open-heart surgery developed fewer complications such as heart attacks that can commonly occur during surgery. They tend to recover faster and return to work, exercise and hobbies much quicker.

Changes Biology

Those that are optimistic have better health. It is not yet fully understood how this occurs, but it is proven that thought will determine mood, and mood will affect hormone activity and immune function. It is to our advantage to be optimistic as it is cheaper than any medication and has no negative side effects!
